Player Killed by Lightning During Football Match in Peru, 5 Players Injured
A heart-breaking incident happened during a football match in Peru, claiming the life of a 34-year-old player and injuring five others when lightning struck the field. The match between Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca in Huancayo province, around 70 km southeast of Lima, was interrupted by lightning strikes. Initially halted due to an initial strike, the game turned deadly when a second bolt hit as players were exiting the field, causing several to collapse immediately, captured on video with a loud crack echoing across the field.
The local municipality confirmed that Hugo de la Cruz, a defender for Familia Chocca, succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital. In a statement, officials extended their sympathies to his family, expressing heartfelt condolences and a wish for recovery for the injured players.
As of Monday, two players had been discharged, while two remained under medical observation, and one was in critical condition but showing signs of improvement. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 90% of people struck by lightning survive, although they may suffer severe burns or memory loss.
While lightning has previously struck football matches in Peru, this was the first fatal incident reported in the country. However, globally, such incidents have occurred before; in 2018, South African player Luyanda Ntshangase died after being struck by lightning during a friendly game.
